AnimERge Emergency and Specialty Hospital is currently seeking healthy dogs and indoor cats to donate blood for patients in need.
Why do animals need blood?
Just as in human medicine, dogs and cats are frequently in need of a blood transfusion for a variety of illnesses including trauma (motor vehicle accidents), kidney disease, clotting disorders, cancers, immune-mediated disorders and bone marrow diseases.
Who is a candidate?
Suitable donors must weigh at least 50 lbs (dogs) or 10 lbs (cats) and be healthy with no previous medical problems. Dogs must be 1-6 years old and cats must be 1-8 years old. All pets considered for donation must have proof of current vaccines, be on flea/tick/heartworm preventative and have not received a prior blood transfusion.
Screening:
Each donor will be screened for common transmissible infectious diseases and will have complete metabolic screening including blood work and a physical exam completed to confirm level of health. This is done through a simple blood draw at our hospital. All screening blood work is done free of charge (around a $600 value) and results are available for your own record.
Incentives and gratitude for your pet becoming a blood donor will be provided!
